Lecture-Recital at Brookhill Hall
A celebration of Roger Sacheverell Coke
After many months of planning, I had the honour last weekend to perform at Roger Sacheverell Coke’s former family home, Brookhill Hall in Pinxton, Derbyshire. The event coincided with the unveiling of a blue plaque commemorating the composer. As curator of the event, I brought together the composer’s family and friends, in a varied evening of performance and speech, including the first performance in 50 years of Coke’s Berceuse (dedicated to his niece, Griselda Brook, who was in the audience).
There was also the opportunity to hear Coke’s Op. 19 songs (sung by Jason Darnell) which were hugely popular during his lifetime and which certainly deserve further exploration. The event was invaluable to my PhD project in that it brought about connections with quite a number of people who knew the composer and who will hopefully help to fill the gaps in my research!
Please comment below if you were there, or if you have any information about Roger Sacheverell Coke.
